What Forms of Identification Can a California Notary Accept? What If My ID Is Expired?
What Forms of Identification Can a California Notary Accept? What If My ID Is Expired?
One of the most common questions I receive as a mobile notary in Corona, California is, "What identification can I use for my notary appointment?" California law requires every notary public to verify the identity of each signer before notarizing a document.
Acceptable Identification for a California Notary
A California notary may accept many forms of identification, including:
California Driver License or California Identification Card
A driver's license or identification card issued by another U.S. state
U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card
Foreign passport stamped by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (or otherwise meeting California requirements)
Military Identification Card
Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
Certain tribal identification cards and other forms of identification authorized under California law
Your identification must contain a photograph, a physical description, a signature, and an identifying number.
What If My ID Is Expired?
This is one of the most common questions I receive.
A California notary cannot simply accept an expired ID. However, California law does allow a notary to accept certain expired forms of identification if the ID was issued within the last five years.
For example, if your California driver's license expired recently but it was originally issued less than five years ago, it may still be acceptable for notarization. If your ID was issued more than five years ago, even if it has only recently expired, it cannot be accepted as satisfactory evidence of identity.
If you don't have an acceptable form of identification, you may still be able to complete your notarization by using 2 credible identifying witnesses, provided all California legal requirements are met.
Questions Before Your Appointment?
If you're unsure whether your identification is acceptable, it's always best to ask before your appointment. A quick phone call can help avoid delays and ensure your notarization goes smoothly.
