Helpful Notary Information for Corona Clients
These quick guides answer common California notary questions about document preparation, acceptable identification, and notarial acts so you know what to expect before your appointment.
How To Prepare for a Notary Appointment
Read your entire document before I arrive to ensure you understand exactly what your signing.
Call or text to secure an appointment time and location that is convienient for you.
Before, I arrive, make sure the document is completely filled out and does not have any blanks. Do not sign the document until your notary arrives.
Have a valid form of Identification available before I arrive. If you need to know what forms are accetable, please ask.
When I arrive, I will briefly go through your documents to make sure that there are no blanks.
Some documents come with California compliant notary attachments and I can use what is provided. Sometimes, the notary forms are not compliant. If this happens, no problem, I always have extras with me to ensure we can complete the notorization.
You will sign your documents in front of me.
I will notarize them.
You will sign my journal.Thats it!
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
What is the difference between an Acknowledgement and a Jurat?
Some documents do not include a notarial certificate. In those cases, I carry California-compliant loose certificates that can be attached at no extra charge.
A common question is: Which one do I need?
As a California notary public, I cannot choose the notarial act for you. That decision must come from the signer or the receiving agency. What I can do is explain the difference so you understand the purpose of each.
California Acknowledgment
An acknowledgment confirms the signer’s identity and verifies that they signed the document willingly.
The document may be signed before the appointment or in front of the notary. The notary does not need to witness the actual signing.
Common uses include real estate documents, powers of attorney, and other documents involving ownership or authority.
California Jurat
A jurat is used when the signer must swear or affirm that the contents of the document are true.
The document must be signed in the presence of the notary, and the signer must take an oath or affirmation.
Common uses include affidavits, sworn statements, and depositions.
Key Difference
Acknowledgment: Confirms identity and willingness to sign.
Jurat: Requires the signer to swear or affirm the document is true in front of the notary.
Acceptable forms of ID
Acceptable Forms of Identification in California
In order for a notary public in California to properly identify a signer, the ID must be current or issued within the last 5 years, contain a photograph, physical description, signature, and a serial or identifying number.
✅ Commonly Accepted IDs:
California Driver’s License or California Identification Card
U.S. Passport Book or Passport Card
Other State Driver’s License or ID Card (issued by a U.S. state)
Driver’s License issued by Canada or Mexico
U.S. Military ID (must contain all required elements: photo, description, signature, and serial number)
Inmate ID card (for inmates in custody in a California state prison, issued by the California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation)
Employee ID card issued by an agency or office of the State of California, or by a California city or county
⚠️ Important Notes:
Expired IDs are not valid, unless issued within the last 5 years.
Credit cards, Social Security cards, birth certificates, or temporary paper IDs are not acceptable for notarization.
If a signer doesn’t have one of the accepted IDs, California notary law does allow the use of two credible witnesses who can vouch for the signer’s identity under oath — but this comes with its own requirements.
